The effects of time will become apparent on your old video tapes (VHS, SVHS, SVHS-C, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8mm, DV/miniDV). Tape uses magnetic imprinting to encode your memories. Time degrades these magnetic imprints, as does exposure to heat (sitting on top of your TV or VCR) or exposure to magnetic fields (sitting next to TV screens). 8mm film, Super-8mm film and 35mm slides are susceptible to the same degradation as that of your photos of that time period. DVDs use "physical" encoding -- the image is digitally "burned" into the DVD layer.
